My grandmother stared at me as I removed the tape from her body. I was afraid to speak to her. I knew she was angry. I could tell by the cold glint in her eyes and how her jaw was set, her lips pursed in a thin angry line.

‘I’m sorry, Grams,’ I finally said.

Arms free, she stretched them in front of her, shaking the blood back into them. ‘He pulled me from my bed. I’d just fallen asleep.’ Her voice was clipped. ‘He didn’t say a word to me. Just forced me downstairs, pushed me into a chair and tied me up. And that’s how we sat, him and I in the dark, waiting for you to return. I had no idea what he’d do to you when you got here, and I had no way to warn you.’ She stood slowly.

I wrapped her in my arms tightly, breathing in her scent of cold cream and lavender. ‘I’m so sorry, Grams. So sorry.’

She sighed. ‘Call your friend and make sure she’s OK.’

Bess.

‘And then call the police. The regular number. Emergency’s over. I’m going to bed.’

I ran to my phone. The screen was cracked but it still worked. I dialed Bess’s number and waited impatiently for her to pick up.

‘Hey! I just saw your message. Nine one one?’ She laughed. ‘Seriously? What’s going on?’

I quickly explained to her all that had transpired.

She squealed into the phone. ‘Oh my God. Nine one one meant you really needed help. I am so sorry. Are you OK? Is your grandma OK?’

I told her yes, we were all fine, but how was she? Where was she?

‘Oh, I’m fine. After you left. Me and my grandmother went to the night market for ice cream. I—’

‘Ice cream? At this hour?’ But I also breathed a huge sigh of relief. ‘You were both in a public place. Bess, I’m so glad you’re both OK.’

Next, I called 911, told the dispatch what happened and waited for the police.

After the police had arrived and taken my statement, I was spent. Emotionally wrung out.

I went to bed.
